Top 5 Boudoir Wardrobe Tips - Part 1

Top 5 Boudoir Wardrobe Tips - Part 1

Top 10 Boudoir Wardrobe Ideas - Fawntail Photography

10 ideas for what to wear to your boudoir session - {Part 1}

When planning your boudoir session, as in life, one of the most important questions you probably have is, "what should I wear?" Fear not, sexy thing, I've got you covered.

Things to keep in mind.

My First Rule of Boudoir: Make the woman look amazing. It doesn't matter what the item of clothing is, no 10 things will flatter every woman, we're all different ages, sizes, shapes, and have unique styles, so I encourage you to read this list as inspiration, not law. Do what makes you feel confident, sexy, amazing, and comfortable!

My Second Rule of Boudoir: Keep it classy. When I go over wardrobe ideas with clients, I like to keep things classic, elegant, and subtle. I avoid anything that will read too cheesy, or make them look like a caricature. In the end, your session is about you, not what you're wearing. Everything you choose should enhance your looks and personality, not overwhelm or camouflage them. I don't usually photograph more than 4 looks in a session, so you don't need every item on this list, just pick and choose your faves.

Ok, lets dive in!

no. 1 - Underpinnings

Let's start with the most obvious choice; a bra & underwear. It's the VIP Exclusive of clothing. Usually expensive, beautiful, and yet nearly no one get's to ever see it. That exclusivity is seriously sexy.

There are a million choices out there for this. Push up, lace, demi, balconette, and let's not even get started on underwear, cheeky,  hi cut, bikini, thong, g-string, the choices are endless. (to help unravel the mystery, stay tuned for my lingerie guide, coming soon!)

The first thing to keep in mind when picking out a bra & underwear, the most important part is fit. Forget what the tags say and look at how it flatters your body. Be careful to avoid things that cut in to your skin, underwear with elastic that's too tight, or the wrong size bra that leaves red marks on your skin. I always recommend my clients get professionally fitted, if they haven't before, to help you find your bra size, after all, we're all supposedly wearing the wrong size bras. (link)

The second thing to keep in mind about bras, is the padding. It might be tempting to get the biggest, baddest push up if you want some Va-Va Voom cleavage, but be careful with that. A push-up can be awesome, but when you're trying it on, be aware of how it moves with you. Does it create a gap when you lay flat? Does it squeeze your chest and create the dreaded "double boob" when you lean over? It might be good to have an option for standing shots where you want cleavage, and a more lacy, unlined or lightly lined option for lying down shots. Whatever you choose, make sure to move around in front of a mirror and watch what it does to your body, before your session.

What to bring:

  • I recommend a classic, lacy black set, something timeless and sexy.

  • A fun color like rich purple, navy, or emerald, whatever flatters your skin tone.

  • A light, soft color like blush, peach, lavender, baby blue, or pistachio, these look really beautiful and dreamy paired with soft white sheets and lots of sunlight.

no. 2 - Something of his

A men's button up is a classic choice. It can be used strategically to flatter your body and hide areas you're uncomfortable with, and gives you that, "morning after" vibe.

That being said, it doesn't have to be a button up shirt.  If your man doesn't regularly wear button ups, doesn't work in them, or just doesn't like them, there are many other options to consider: his favorite, worn out t-shirt, a work jacket, favorite sweater, and so on. The important part is to pick something he loves wearing, because he'll love seeing you in it.

Tip: I almost always veto sports jerseys and other branded items, they are usually not that flattering, and can go corny really fast. Unless your husband IS Payton Manning, you shouldn't be wearing his jersey. (exception: a faded, vintage looking Broncos t-shirt? It could work.)

no. 3 - The Dress

Your favorite little black dress, black is optional, but your favorite cocktail dress, will help you feel confident, and the next time you wear it, you'll remember your awesome photographs.

Also, that fancy formal dress you never get to wear, can be a beautiful option for some glamorous portraits.

Flowy, long skirts, or body con are both great options!

no. 4 - Girl next door

You, like, totally woke up like this. Imagine the cutest version of yourself lounging around the house in a simple t-shirt, cute undies, and maybe socks (even if this never happens IRL). This is a really fun, more casual look that feels approachable and you probably have this stuff in your closet already!

When choosing a t-shirt, pick one that's super soft, and looks well-worn. It shouldn't be too long, too bulky or too heavy, but should skim your body, and hit right around the hips. A soft long-sleeve t-shirt is a great option too!

Reverse it: baggy sweats, a cute bra, and sky-high heels can be a fun spin on this look. It's still sporty and casual, but you're revealing and covering different parts of your body.

no. 5 - The bodysuit

A body suit or teddy (the teddy is basically a lacy version of the body suit) can be a super flattering option for showing off curves, and disguise your not-so-favorite features.

A long-sleeve body suit with a boatneck or deep plunge, or high cut legs looks modern, edgy, and super sexy and unexpected.

Make sure you try a few on, and when in doubt, size up to avoid the leg openings cutting into your tush. Places like American Apparel have great options for body suits. Find them here (link).

Teddys are a really cute option, usually lacy, sheer, and fitted, they can be worn over your bra and underwear, or sometimes on their own, paired with a sheer little robe or cardigan, they can be more covered up, but with a super high sexy factor. I've found some pretty ones at Victoria's Secret.

Choose ones in dark navy, black, or purple to show off your skin underneath if you're light skinned, or pick soft light feminine colors for a dreamy feel, or for a gorgeous contrast for darker skin tones.

Bonus: often times teddys will have garter straps, that can attach to thigh-high stockings for an even sexier look.

I hope you enjoyed my first installment of 10 things to wear to your Boudoir Session!

Which brings us to... part 2! I'll talk about thigh high stockings and garters, among other things. Stay tuned!
